Description

Each year, about 160 thousand Poles are diagnosed with cancer. Initially, cancer patients assume that medication or an operation can eradicate the problem. Therapy, however, is a demanding and time-consuming process. PSYCHE SOMA POLIS developed a method that supports patients and members of their families.

Each person diagnosed deserves a comprehensive approach. Not only does a patient need medication, but they also require psychological, social and educational support. They also need to change their eating habits and lifestyle.

"Psychoeducation groups are a tried and tested solution. Members of those groups learn how to cope with stress, and talk to their doctors and relatives", says Joanna Zapała, a clinical psychologist, psychotherapist and the President of the Board of PSYCHE SOMA POLIS.

The project entitled ‘Onco-Joga’ offers patients a tool that enables them to become involved in the treatment process.

The project developed video manuals that help patients and their relatives.

"Videos show how the patient can facilitate the healing process, e.g. through physical activity, and control over emotions and diets. Solutions promoted can be used at various stages of treatment and convalescence", says Agnieszka Lewandowska, a project coordinator.

Videos concentrate on healing yoga practices, exercises suitable for patients, as well as diet and psychological recommendations.

Quick health recipe

Eat regularly 4-5 times a day at equal intervals. Fruit and vegetables should account for at least a half of your daily intake. Select seasonal fruit and vegetables. Avoid highly processed products. Stay active and take care of maintaining good relations with other people!

"Nutrition is one of key factors in healing. It has a direct impact on our digestive and immune systems. A proper diet can improve the quality of life", says Jolanta Nalewaj-Nowak, MD, nutritionist and psycho-oncologist.

Anyone interested in improving their health and quality of life can download manuals from the ‘Onco-Joga’ project website.
